Membrane Bioreactor

Membrane bioreactors rank among the most efficient biological wastewater treatment plants. By using membrane filtration to separate biomass from the treated effluent, it is possible to achieve a compact construction volume, high standards of treatment and an effluent completely free of microorganisms.

These are only a few of the many advantages of this technology. Further development of membranes and modules has led to external membranes becoming an economic alternative in municipal wastewater treatment.

In biological wastewater treatment, the biological reactor and the membrane separation stage form a single process unit. This means that the elimination capacity with regard to dissolved carbon compounds and the structure of the activated sludge have a particularly significant influence on filtration behavior. High microorganism concentrations (rheology of the sludge), for example, and unhealthy activated sludge (high EPS) reduce the filtration capacity of the membrane phase. High wastewater temperatures, (viscosity) on the other hand, increase filtration capacity.

Benefits

  • germ-free effluent
  • solid-free effluent
  • compact design of biological stage due to high MLSS
  • Biomass separation always warranted
  • Water re-use possible without disinfection
  • Modular design
